Oak, changed by water and time
The morta I use comes from Eastern Europe. In waterlogged ground, low oxygen slows decay. Iron compounds react with the oak’s tannins, creating its deep brown and near-black tones.
Look closely and the grain is still there: fine lines, open pores and subtle variations that catch the light as you turn the handle. This timber has not been radiocarbon dated; its precise age remains unknown.

Preparing your handle
I stabilise the wood in my atelier and turn and finish each handle by hand. The finish is matte, with a final light application of Hampshire Sheen wax to help reduce fingerprints. The wood’s natural pores and grain remain visible.
